― Deepak Chopra, The Return of Merlin
Thanks to a weekend of eclectic study and research, I followed a YouTube presentation on metaphors and in the midst of the presentation, the person presenting, lets call him David, told the story of "The Return of Merlin" by Deepak Chopra.
I remember reading the book a few years ago, and it struck a memory of a quote in the book. In fact the one at the top of this article.
I can not think of anything worse in either my business or social life, than to be struck by the....
Issue - The state of being still, or not moving, like a sitting puddle of water.
Suggestion - Who would want to stand still in a puddle of water, rather than jump into it with both feet!
Issue - So lacking in originality as to be obvious and boring.
Suggestion - No one that knows me would ever say that I am boring! There is the tenant that there is nothing original in the world, maybe not even original thought. I tend to feel that, similar to what Terry Pratchett does in his stories about the disc world, that if you can take a situation, and see it sideways on, that can be unique to you. How do you approach this?
Issue - A state of despair, typically one which results in rash or extreme behaviour.
Suggestion - This is where Mindfulness comes into its own. The ability to Pause, Reflect before Acting, is something that has helped me tremendously over the past few years, preventing me from making a number of rash, extreme and hasty decisions.
Issue - Compliance with standards, rules, or laws or in accordance with socially accepted conventions.
Suggestion - There are always going to be rules, regulations or dictates at work. Whether it is
the stupid rules in meetings, guidelines for even writing e:mails. Government regulations, etc. You can not escape these, well you could if you lived a self contained life on an independent island and I don't think a truly completely free environment exists. Rather, accept what there is and live within it. I take them more as guidelines and try to be as positive as possible. And yes, I will say they are stupid and nonsense when asked.
What are you curses to befall you? At work? Socially or Privately? How do you deal with them. Agree or disagree, feel free to share and comment.
